Deadly Departed Review By Roy Stemman

Jock Brocas, author of the newly-published Deadly Departed – great title! – is one of the founders of the American Society for Standards in Mediumship and Psychical Investigation (ASSMPI) and currently its president. He is also an evidential medium in his own right and author of other books in this field, but his new work challenges many of the beliefs associated with spirit communication.

I have been reporting on successful mediumistic communications for decades and have the greatest respect for those whose gifts enable them to comfort the grieving. Receiving evidence that a loved one has survived the transition we call death can be a life-changing experience.

Though many mediums appear to be born with the ability to commune with the next world almost effortlessly, others – wishing to emulate the skilled exponents they see on TV or on church platforms – seek to follow in their footsteps with more enthusiasm than natural talent, and they may need all the help they can get, particularly in recognizing the differences between psychic and mediumistic ability.

Even famous and established mediums had to develop their techniques and hone their skills so that they can accurately interpret what they see, hear or feel and convey that information sensitively to the recipient.

Most will have been fortunate in finding a mentor whose encouragement and mediumistic intuition gave them the confidence to persevere with their development and slowly open channels of communication with the spirit world.

Others, living more isolated lives, may have sought guidance from books that promised to teach them the basics of mediumship, hopefully with good results. But Jock Brocas is one of the first self-help authors to warn novice mediums that their desire to help others might be leading them into dangerous, unknown territory.

There will be mediums who dismiss his claims, insisting that they have never encountered spirits who had the power to damage them physically or spiritually, or even endanger their lives. Brocas’s view seems to be that they have been very fortunate.

The main message of his book (subtitled Dos, Don’ts and Dangers of Afterlife Communication) is: Don’t underestimate the need for protection. Risks that would-be medium might face include possession and obsession, and he warns that novice mediums can experience very real attacks.

Fortunately, as well as giving good advice on the basics of mediumistic development, he also shares techniques for protecting yourself as you slowly progress on your journey.

Some of these methods might raise eyebrows in traditional Spiritualist circles, particularly among veteran mediums who have managed to achieve their high standards by relying entirely on their spirit guides for protection. Brocas, on the other hand, has had a few “close shaves” with evil entities and he tells us that there are tools like crystals, salt baths and angels, which have all made a significant contribution to protection, but not to rely on them alone.

As someone who has no obvious signs of mediumistic ability and even less of a desire to develop it – I take my hat off to anyone with the courage to pursue that path – I was pleased to see that this detailed book is not just for fledgling mediums. You’ll find chapters on the dangers of ouija boards and automatic writing, electronic voice phenomenon (EVP), hauntings, ghosts and, inevitably, fraudulent mediums.

Brocas illustrates these with examples of his own cases, including one titled, “Grounded spirit masquerading as a trusted guide”. There are also contributions And he concludes with a chapter teaching the reader to “Establish boundaries and avoid problems”.

I would like to think that few developing mediums would encounter even a tiny percentage of the paranormal pitfalls Brocas describes, but if I were trying to develop my mediumistic skills, I would certainly want Brocas’s book, and the positive guidance it offers, at my elbow … just in case.

I Don’t Believe In Life After Death

Ok, so that may have shocked you a little to hear from a medium they don’t believe in life after death and the reason that I don’t believe is because I know there is life after death. You see to believe in something implies following a pattern of someone else’s perception, but to know is divine.

In our society there are many perceptions, and often when we grieve, the question of, “Is there life after death? Or “Where do they go when they die? Is often the mainstay of someone’s thought process or that thought that occupies every second of every day. There’s an inherent fear that suffocates you and that is “what if there’s nothing, what if my loved ones are gone and that’s it.” The very thought that you will not see or feel your loved ones again is unthinkable and is a spiraling unending pain that is often too hard to face and deal with. The very point of life seems wasted and so we stop valuing ourselves, we retreat into our shells because that’s the place where we feel safe and of course, no one really understands our grief. We believe that our grief will always exist, but in reality that is not the case.

Impermanence

There is philosophy in Buddhism that suggests that life and everything within life is interconnected and at the same time – impermanent, meaning that everything that is conditioned existence is transient and in constant change. In reflection, this can also help us to understand grief, that it is also impermanent and will not always exist in its current form, but will of course change in continuous motion. This perception or basis in Buddhism is also called Anicca or Anitya, which is ancient sanskrit and asserts the idea of transience. It is a fact that when we grieve, our emotions are in a state of transience, in that, they are always changing and moving from one state to the other. No one can say how long or how fast you should move through these states of being and how you should react. Nevertheless, understanding and having an awareness of the impermanence of grief can actually help you to understand how to move through it and how you can begin to experience a new energy that will allow you to reach into the state of harmony between yourself, your grief and your loved ones. It is time to learn the language of the soul.

The Language Of The Soul

You have language, you understand your language in your current iteration and you have forgotten your true language. This is the language of the soul, it is the reality of your existence and part of the divine essence that is you and animates you and has brought you into being by natural spiritual law. So how does this have anything to do with grief? The answer is very simple. Because, learning the language of the soul will help you not only move through the grieving process faster, but will also help you touch the void of the spirit to cross the bridge between the material and the spiritual and meet your loved ones on the other side of life.

So this language is not one that anyone can teach you, it is already within you and is as simple as awakening to the spirit within. We have all heard of those signs that are around you that help you to understand or recognize the connection of your loved ones such as;

  • Animal signs
  • Dreams
  • Smells
  • Energy
  • Music
  • Synchronicities
  • Visual Awareness
  • Auditory Awareness

Of course, there is much more, but that is only the start. The truth is that in order to change anything in life, one must have an awareness. However, that awareness is only scratching the surface between the physical and the spiritual. One must learn to become aware of the awareness and though that may sound rather strange, it is easier to understand it from recognition of the divine authority and power that you hold. Becoming aware of the awareness is going beyond your breathing, which of course is actually one of the best techniques to learn how to deal with grief and connect with your loved ones – learn how to breathe.

There is a subtle change that happens when we awaken this awareness and one will begin to find that knowing reality of the spirit and divinity becomes very real. You begin to notice those subtle nuances that are manifested from the world of spirit and in that recognition you get one stage further in becoming even more aware of spirit and the power you hold.

Breakthrough In Knowing

At this juncture, you would have taken a massive leap forward and you would have experienced that spiritual breakthrough and awakening of the soul. Those signs that you now experience and the interconnectedness between you and spirit means that you now know the reality of life after death. How communication and language of your divine being is a right and a divine truth – even a purpose. You now do not believe in life after death, you know there is life after death because you understand the language of the soul.

Easter The Afterlife Month

Easter is here, it is the month of March and spring. A time for renewal and rebirth, and as far as the Christian Calendar is concerned, it is a time of the celebration of Christs resurrection. Amongst the turmoil of the world, beauty exists and knowledge sparks life into light.

However, even though this is a time of renewal and new birth, perhaps we can look at this easter spring time as a time where one of the greatest spiritual teachers on earth proved that life continues, and the reality of the afterlife is real and a truth of universal love. Nothing separates us and nothing ever will, for we are eternal beings. In this month, there are examples of healings, of understanding the universe and growing closer to the reality of who we are. This is the time to grow in faith and harmony and to take the power that is your divine right. It is your fundamental divine right. Revelations are perceptions and perceptions are illusions of truth.

We see this time as a time when Jesus proved beyond a shadow of doubt that a belief in the afterlife is real, that death does not separate us and that we are eternal beings. Easter is what I like to term as the month of the Afterlife. It is customary in Christian belief to recognize the suffering that Jesus went through in order to purge humanity of sin. However, the positiveness of this that should be taken by all of us who have lost loved ones is that he proved eternal life and so that should bring some comfort to those who grieve and feel lost because of the grief experienced in losing a loved one. By the very fact that we celebrate the resurrection, are we not celebrating the existence of the afterlife.

We know life continues from the many discourses and evidence we have of the Otherside. It is therefore more prudent to celebrate that life is everlasting and our loved ones have not left us. They exist in the reality of the spirit world and I like to think that at this time perhaps Jesus is over there giving them a lecture about spirit and the everlasting reality that we live.

I.S.A.R.T.O.P. – The Forerunner to the ASSMPI – that ‘Never got off the Ground’.

This Article was inspired yesterday by our Spirit Team who – after our (excellent) group sitting – had dug into our stored historical archives; taken out a copy of an old ‘Psychic World’ and then – almost like an apport – had deposited this on the table in the middle of our ‘Experimental Room’. I discovered inside an article about the launch of I.S.A.R.T.O.P. in 2005. So here goes………..
Scole Legacy
It all started one sunny afternoon in May 2004. Sandra – my lovely wife – had a night job with a local electronics company in Diss, Norfolk, and had then returned from her night shift to our farmhouse home in Scole for a well-earned sleep! I was myself already off to work – normally unlikely to return until 6 pm or later. However, on this particular day, I had a sudden unexplained feeling that I needed to get home early from work. Arriving at about 3 pm, I was extremely surprised to see a group of about 8 people standing in our driveway, who were just about to knock on the door. At this time of day, Sandra was still in bed. I met them and asked them what they wanted, then suggested that they went next door with me to the beautiful old Scole Inn (built in 1666) for a chat until Sandra could join us.

I soon discovered that these 8 people were Italian. Although they were all strangers, they were very friendly and seemed to know an awful lot about the 5-year long ‘Scole Experiment’ in the 1990’s that had taken place here at ‘Street Farmhouse’ in Scole. They were themselves sitting in a home circle to develop Physical Phenomena back in Grosseto, Italy, and the group included a well-known physical medium – Marcello Bacci  – who regularly demonstrated his DRV (Direct Radio Voice) Mediumship in his Centre. He was there with his wife Marina, two friends; Alessandro Zampieri; Amerigo Festa (a lawyer) and their two wives. The seventh person – a Media personality – was Emanuel Toriello, who seemed to be the self-appointed ‘leader’ and spokesman for the group. Emanuel’s wife was also there.

The elderly Marcello Bacci was a veteran researcher in the field of EVP (he knew Konstantin Raudive, and had actually inherited Raudive’s equipment). His particular expertise lay in DRV, since he had been getting Direct Radio Voices for many years through an old-fashioned valve radio in his Grosseto Centre/Laboratory. Bacci demonstrated these voices on a weekly basis to around 70 or 80 people (mostly bereaved mothers, who were often able to speak a few words to their ‘deceased’ children) without ever charging a penny for his work. He told me that for some time prior to their surprise visit to Scole, Direct Spirit Voices through his radio had been requesting that Bacci and his ‘Research Friends’ travel to Scole to see us – and that is why they had traveled over to the UK on this occasion.

At this first meeting in the Scole Inn, whilst we were chatting, somebody asked me for a business card. I put my hand into my pocket and – as I took out the business card – three apports fell off my hand, having materialized in front of us all in full light!! At that point, I started to take the meeting more seriously, and listen more carefully to what they all had to say!

Consequently, Sandra and I were invited out to Italy as a result. We flew to Rome in September 2004 and were kindly driven up from there to Grosseto by Alessandro Zampieri. We were indeed greatly impressed by the people at Bacci’s Centre (his close research group included) and by the many and varied impressive ‘Radio Voices’ we witnessed, speaking to us clearly through his radio.

Many of the Italian contingents became firm friends, and I re-visited Bacci at Grosseto during early December 2004. Also, there on that occasion were: Paolo Presi (psychic researcher); Professor David Fontana (one of the main SPR investigators of the ‘Scole Experiment and co-author of the ‘Scole Report’) and Dr. Anabela Cardoso, a major EVP/DRV researcher and Portuguese Consul in Vigo, Spain.

Shortly afterward, Emanuel Toriello and Alessandro Zampieri were based in the UK for a while and began to sit with us in the ‘Scolehole’ on a fairly regular basis. We had a few instances of minor physical phenomena on the occasions that they sat, but there was no proper development of phenomena which is what we would have liked to see happen. In fact, despite several efforts of ours to re-create the Scole Group after the ‘Scole Experiment’ finished, with several different sets of sitters it soon became clear that neither the time, the sitters, nor the place was right to bring back the phenomena in profusion and – for several months before we left Scole to come and live in Spain in 2006, we could actually physically feel the spiritual atmosphere and positive feeling that had been the psychic heart of ‘Street Farm’ slowly seeping away from us.

Through regular meetings with my new Italian friends, and communication with a number of other serious researchers all over the world, the idea gradually came together to start a fully international association that could cooperate with research projects and serious experimenters internationally – helping one another with every aspect of development and demonstration of the various phenomena and different types of mediumship (in a word – SHARING); as well as acting as a forum for discussion and education regarding the latest and most successful techniques of research. It was hoped that – if the promised funding (and much was promised) proved itself in reality, then – eventually – the organization itself might even be in a position to help out with the limited funding of deserving research projects.

I was personally asked to help run the organization because of my long-term experience of all types of physical phenomena, plus my extensive knowledge – acquired over decades – of the very best examples of deep trance and evidential mental mediumship. I was also lucky enough to have made a great number of international quality contacts who would prove to be useful to the organization over the years.

Already promised from relevant sources (and eagerly anticipated) was a high level of funding from certain high-profile international bodies, which would help the organisation to improve collaboration between researchers and establish better human relations in the field of scientific transcendental research so – in order to protect the correct academic image, it was deemed important to keep the title of the organisation on a scientific level, and to go about the running of the organisation in a highly professional and thorough manner.

As a first step, a number of key international researchers, experimenters, mediums, and contacts attended two meetings at the St. Giles Hotel, London W1 on Sunday, February 6th, 2005 to ratify the organization’s name; discuss the setup and set the aims and objects of the project. The morning meeting consisted mainly of delegates who were serious ITC/EVP/DRV researchers and experimenters, with the separate afternoon meeting being attended by delegates whose interest lay mainly with objective physical psychic phenomena.

Amongst the morning delegates were: Professor David Fontana; Dr. Anabela Cardoso; John and Maryse Locke from Paris; Dr. Hans Schaer from Switzerland; Tina Laurent from Wales; James and Shirley Webster (James was a retired professional Magician) from Hastings; Chris Pettit; Lewis Elbinger; Marcello and Marina Bacci; Emanuel Toriello (who was to assume the position of the CEO of the new organisation); Alex and Maria Zampieri; Lawyer Amerigo and wife Rosella Festa, together with us – Robin and Sandra Foy.

The afternoon session also included: Denzil and Kay Fairbairn (Denzil is a nephew of famous physical medium Jack Webber); Paul Barker from David Thompson’s physical mediumship development circle – plus Dennis and Rosalind Pearman, who were the founders of the ‘Zerdin Fellowship’, following the demise of the Noah’s Ark Society.

Emanuel Toriello’s suggestion of the name I.S.A.R.T.O.P. was approved, which stood for the ‘International Scientific Association (for) Research (into) Transcendental Objective Phenomena. Looking back, it was certainly a mouthful !!! The mission statement of I.S.A.R.T.O.P – together with its aims and objectives – was to be issued shortly afterward, followed by the appointment of a board of trustees. Once the infrastructure of the organization was in place. membership details and invitations were to be published. It was envisaged that the first full meeting of I.S.A.R.T.O.P  would take place a few months later, in May or June of 2005. As potential ‘trustees’ of the organization, it fell to Sandra and me to compile a list of interested researchers and members of the public for the early mailing lists. This was something we were happy to do.

The I.S.A.R.T.O.P organisation was to be structured as a number of departments working in parallel with one another, each dealing with their own speciality (sounds very familiar to me today, knowing that Jock Brocas has now – in the real world – very successfully achieved the reality of this vision with his practical and sensible creation of the ASSMPI !!!) For instance, there was to be an extensive ITC/EVP and DRV department; a department for physical mediumship and its phenomena; possibly a department for trance work; maybe even one for crop circles and UFO’s. Experience had already taught us that many of these were – in any case – inexorably linked.

It was hoped that there would eventually be two full-time administrator/coordinators, and other experts available to handle all aspects of members’ questions. The budding organization would pledge to help and oversee the development of both mental; trance and physical mediums, seeking to continually improve the general quality of mediumship internationally – with the provision of ‘ACCURATE EVIDENCE’ of an Afterlife being the constant objective for the organization to follow.

A major website was envisaged – operating as a ‘portal’ through which members could access their particular area of interest. There would be various educational and self-help instructional booklets available to members, covering all aspects of scientific research into this specialist subject – to help them develop their own research projects and phenomena.

Members were to receive a regular magazine (possibly quarterly initially), together with regular research reports from those members who were involved in relevant research projects. This would help with the SHARING of knowledge and information between members. In so doing, these would also encourage further development amongst members. A documentary was planned on the work of several prominent researchers, together with regular conferences, seminars, and social functions.

The whole I.S.A.R.T.O.P. project was very ambitious. It was a new concept on a massive scale – something that at that time had never been attempted and successfully achieved on such a grandiose and fully international scale. But – regrettably – it was not to be. The Italian contingent who had originally planned this concept (in particular, Emanuel Toriello, who was to be the CEO of the project) ceased to be available regularly for the project to go ahead fully. Sandra and I were personally asked to undertake (and did) much of the preparatory work to get the organization going. Our own funds were stretched beyond reasonable levels and funding was vital to achieve even the basic steps. Regrettably, the promised (and – we believed solid) source of income never arrived, despite the initial assurances.

Thank goodness that the motivation we had as the potential creators of the I.S.A.R.T.O.P project has not fallen by the wayside!!!  Another man of vision – our own President and top-quality Medium Jock Brocas – was similarly inspired (several years later) to create a truly international organization – the ASSMPI – along similar lines. Not only did Jock have the vision to do so, but – against all the odds – Jock has succeeded almost single-handedly where we failed all those years ago!!! Congratulations and thanks are due from us all Jock – to you and your own special Spirit Team – for your truly inspirational achievement in really and truly putting the ASSMPI on the map!!!
A Note From The President:
When this came across my desk at the ASSMPI office, I was flabbergasted as I never expected to receive such an accolade. I want to make it known that behind the organization has always been service to Spirt and been guided by Spirit. Without Spirit answering prayers for help when all seemed impossible, we are only where we are because of the dedication of the whole ASSMPI team and we have a long way to go, but with each day, we take one step closer. We are in no rush and we always look for quality rather than quantity. The journey has just begun and we have a great band of brothers and sisters to travel on this journey together. Whilst I accept the accolade, I am nothing without the team on both sides of life and The ASSMPI was by Spirit – for Spirit – through Spirit – to Spirit and in service to Spirit. We are non-political, non-judgemental and welcome all with open arms.

Are all ‘Professional’ Mediums the Real Deal?

People from all backgrounds and life paths seek out mediumship as an experience worth having.  But mostly, the people who sit with mediums to hear from a loved one in spirit are there because they are searching for a way to cope with grief; they want to know their loved one is okay, and they have messages they’d like to send and receive.  That being said, it goes hand-in-hand then that people who sit with mediums can often be in an incredibly vulnerable state.
This reality about why most people seek out a medium is what substantiates the legitimate need to study and practice mediumship extensively before going out into this world as a professional medium.  Being the intermediary between the worlds is very rarely cut and dry.  It takes a lot of learning and a lot of experience to represent spirit people with truth, accuracy, skill, and compassion.
These days it seems there are many mediums who have taken a few weeks of classes and then hang a shingle as ‘professional’.  Sadly, what we often see as a result is weak mediumship, and we also see the nature of spirit and the soul journey misrepresented to the general public.  And in all cases, there is a potentially damaging effect taking place.
If someone wanted to become an accountant, or a counsellor, or an electrician, they would have to train and learn and practice in order to be qualified and good at it, right? Why should it be any different for a professional Spiritual Medium?  Well, it shouldn’t be.
Most experienced mediums will tell you these days that there are many out there who skip development circles and core teachings, which are absolutely necessary in becoming a well-skilled, heart-centred practitioner. The title “Medium” has become quite coveted with the advent of more mainstream television shows demonstrating mediumship. So flashy in fact that too many people are bypassing the necessary steps required to become a good medium!
The same reality applies to teaching the practice mediumship.  What we also now see quite often is ill-trained, ill-experienced mediums teaching others from a shallow well, and the result we see from this dynamic is more of the same; ill-experienced and ill-trained mediums who have gone out into the world as professionals long before they should have.  As a professional, you have to take great care of the souls, here and on the other side sometimes, who come to see you when they are feeling broken.  By and large, a few weeks or months of classes does not bring one far enough on the spiritual or soul journey to authentically be in service to others in a way that acknowledges the need for such a high level of care, nor does it develop the capacity to provide it.
A woman recently wrote to me and said that she’d been to an inexperienced, untrained medium’s live platform event. The ordeal was so poor it led her into a place of total disbelief that we can communicate with spirits at all. There is a price to be paid on a grander scale by hanging a shingle too soon. People’s lives and hearts are at stake – not just those of the people who witness the poor demonstrations, but those of the authentic, legitimate mediums who have made it their life’s work to bridge the gap, bringing healing to this world and the next.
Mediumship is a sacred act, and not honouring that as truth in a mediumship practice can be called egocentric. The centre of the story in compassionate, heart-based service must be the other, not the self. Meaning, becoming a professional without having built the bridges in one’s own soul development makes the story more about what the medium wants to accomplish as an individual, and not necessarily what others need. More succinctly, serving without learning is self-serving…
So, I have some TIPS for those who have yet to sit with a medium but would like to, or who would like to learn mediumship for themselves:
  • Make sure you vet people before paying to see them.  Look for published testimonials that are clearly unpaid (many inexperienced mediums will trade a free service in order to receive a trumped up, sensationalized testimonial from someone).  Best of all though, would be to get a referral from someone you know and trust.  Remember: all mediums start out somewhere, so experience as a professional doesn’t HAVE to be vast in order for the medium to be good at what they do. However, if you are exchanging dollars for a service, best to know that someone is the real deal – either by reading what others have to say, or following your heart (and gut)…
  • It’s a good idea to try having many mediumship experiences so you can discern between good, strong mediumship, and weak demonstrations that don’t prove very much.
  • When looking for a spiritual mentor or teacher, look for experience.  A person who has only had a relatively short time in mediumship practice simply has not had the quantity and likely not the quality of readings from which to guide you in knowledgeable way.  So much of what is learned in advanced practice and finessing the practice of mediumship happens through sheer practice and volume of professional sittings.  If someone doesn’t have vast experience, their ability to teach YOU will be limited by their own insubstantial experience.
Depending on what you are hoping to experience by sitting with a medium (e.g., just an interest you have, or a profound opportunity to connect with a loved one in spirit, etc.), you could even have an encounter that causes emotional harm.  I can’t tell you how many times in my practice I’ve had someone sit with me and say something like, “another Medium told me my loved one must be stuck somewhere and that’s why they couldn’t get a lot of information from them…”. “Is that true – are they okay?  I’m worried.”  Oh boy.
Experiences that leave one disempowered or fearful are almost always chock-full of a medium’s lack of skill, or compassion, or understanding – or all three.  Sitting with or learning from a reputable medium is one of the safest ways to avoid a potential encounter like this.
So, best advice is to do your homework when selecting a practitioner or a teacher, and, most importantly, ask your heart if the person you’re considering is the right fit for you at this time.
There are so many wonderfully-talented and legitimate mediums out there.  But not everyone working as a professional has the background and experience to really, actually, help you.
